Royals End on a Positive

The Royals entered their last weekend of the season with their heads held high and ready for battle. Saturday night was a fan appreciation night. We saw General Manager Sam McMullen say a few words at the start of the game thanking all Sponsors, Fans and families for their continued support throughout the season.

The Royals program presented their 17-year olds with a picture of them with all of their teammate’s signatures. This was a farewell for all 17-year olds. We wish them luck in their new adventures ahead.

Saturday did not go as planned as Okanogan played a strong game to win 2-0, loan bright spot was Connor Svienson in his last Midget game as a 17-year-old he stood on his head to keep the Royals in it, unfortunately he got no run support.

Sunday was a different story; the Royals came out strong and battled hard every shift against the Rockets. The Royals would score first with a goal from Michael Hoekstra, Assisted by Jovan Malay. Chase Klassen would add another one on the PP to make it 2-0 in the second. Assists go to Brandwood and Vela. The Rockets came back strong scoring a goal shortly after by Marchant. Going into the 3rd the Royals were up 2-1, but that didn’t last long. The Rockets scored in the first 16 seconds to tie the game up. Egan and Vela would get back to back goals to maintain the lead at 4-2. Rockets would get one more-late to push it to 4-3 but the Royals would hang on. Forman with another solid performance and the boys rallied behind each other to go out a winning team in 2019

4 Games, 3 Cities in 9 Days

The Royals split the weekend series Vs North Island and Cariboo over the past 2 weeks. Saturday’s home game on February 9th was a barn burner. Royals scored first to take the lead thanks to Sdrakas, from Barlow and Hicks.

Second period was back and forth with no scoring.

Fikowski finally found the back of the net for the Royals at the start of the 3rd period, assist to Tyson Johnston. The two-goal lead was short lived as the Silvertips scored less than a minute later to make it 2-1. Then another quick Silvertips goal, tied it up with 3 minutes to play.

Hemmingway took a penalty with just over 2 minutes to play, putting the Royals on the Powerplay. Brandwood, a Kamloops Blazers signed prospect, took a shot off the rush and the rebound went right to Pollock who made no mistake with a slapshot from the slot. Royals ended up winning 4-2, Kaylan added an empty net goal.

On the following Thursday the Royals traveled to Frank Crane arena to finish the weekend series Vs the Silvertips. The Royals were without Everett Silvertips signed prospect Ty Gibson as he is currently with Team BC at the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, AB.

The Tips scored first and carried the lead into the 2nd period. With 6 minutes to go in the second period the tips scored to take a 2-0 lead. The next shift Barlow made a heads up play to Vela, who skated in and scored to bring the Royals within one.

With three minutes to go in the 3rd Vela scored again from Barlow and Malay to tie things up going into the 3rd. In the 3rd period, the Royals found themselves in penalty trouble and the tips capitalized to take the game 5-2.

After Thursday’s game, the Royals traveled to Prince George to face the Cariboo Cougars. Saturday’s game was all Cariboo, with the loan bright spot coming from Liam Hicks end to end rush getting the Royals on the board. This would make no difference as the Cougars took the game 8-1.

Sunday was a different story. The Royals were able to get back into the win column with a hard-fought team win. 45 seconds into the first Booker Daniels was able to get in alone and scored on Forman to give Cariboo the early 1-0 lead.

With two minutes to go in the first Aleko Sdrakas was able to make a great play stripping the Cariboo D man of the puck to get his 3rd of the season to tie things up. Less than 30 seconds later, Michael Hoekstra recieved a slip pass from Simon Pollock to put the Royals up 2-1 going into the 2nd.

The second period was end to end but no scoring.

Cariboo would tie things up with 8 minutes to go in the 3rd with a goal from Marotta, his first of the season. With just over 7 minutes to go, Carbioo took a penalty and the Royals were able to take advantage. Jovan Malay made a great pass to Hicks, and Quddus Kalyan was able to tip in the point shot from Hicks to give the Royals a 3-2 lead with 6 minutes to play.

The Royals held off the push from Cariboo to get their 10th win of the season. Brendan Forman got the win.

The Royals will travel to Kamloops this weekend to play a weekend set against the Thompson Blazers.

The TBirds finished the game with 4 PowerPlay goals to take the game with a 7-2 win. Chase Klassen added a goal midway through the 3rd, assists went to Tyson Johnston and Ethan Brandwood.

Sunday was a much different story. The Royals came out strong again scoring first. The coaches made minor adjustments to the PK and shut down the high-flying Fraser Valley power play. Ty Gibson opened the scoring with 52 seconds left in the 1st, assists to Michael Hoekstra and Ethan Brandwood. The Royals had a 2-1 lead going into the third, and with a great team effort they held on to earn a very needed 2 points. Game winning goal goes to Carson Strom with a wraparound assisted by Hoesktra and Klassen. Brendan Forman was a rock for the Royals on Sunday morning, making key saves at the right times and only letting 1 goal in when the push came from the Tbirds.
