Zach Guerra

I graduated from the University of Central Oklahoma in Spring 2025, where I earned a Bachelor of Business Administration with a focus on Business Management and Human Resources. During my time at UCO, I also competed on the Men’s Division I ACHA hockey team, further developing my leadership, discipline, and teamwork skills.

My experience at Spectrum Hockey Academy played a foundational role in both my personal and athletic development. It provided me with invaluable life lessons, strong friendships, and lasting memories that continue to shape who I am today. The academy challenged me to grow not only as an athlete, but also as a student and an individual, instilling qualities such as accountability, perseverance, and commitment.
I am extremely grateful for my time at Spectrum Hockey Academy and take great pride in being an alumni.

Chase Klassen

I was in the Spectrum Hockey Academy in grade 9 and also in grade 12 while playing for the Westshore Wolves Jr B hockey Club. After graduation I played 3 years for the Alberni Valley Bulldogs where I was the captain for my 3rd and final year. Through my junior hockey career I won several awards including VIJHL Rookie of the Year. In the BCHL I was awarded the Community Hero award and the Humanitarian award with the Alberni Valley Bulldogs. Currently I am an assistant coach with the Westshore Wolves of the VIJHL. I am working concrete while doing courses to work in the hospital sector as security. My long term goal is to become an RCMP officer.

The best lesson I learned while in the Spectrum Hockey Academy was from Darren Smith, “There is much more to life than hockey, it is about being a great person and being involved in the community you are living in. Always act like someone is watching.”

Nathan King

I am currently in my 2nd year at Merrimack College after playing 3 seasons with the Victoria Grizzlies, and I am majoring in Business Management with a minor in Psychology.  Being at Spectrum was a special experience, and one that I will always be grateful for.  It taught me to be disciplined and organized, and it allowed me to improve as both a person and a hockey player.  After college I have aspirations to play professional hockey and hope to have the opportunity to make a career out of it.  I’m very thankful and proud to be a part of the alumni!

Quinton Waitzner

After graduating from Spectrum, I went on to complete my Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Victoria, specializing in Entrepreneurship and Service Management. Through my studies at UVic, I gained valuable insight into the operational and financial aspects of running a business.

Today, I’m an owner/operator of a couple of Dairy Queen locations here in Victoria. In this role, I oversee day-to-day operations, customer service standards, and overall financial performance.

Katie Banman

I am a third-year law student at the University of Victoria, where I am pursuing both my Juris Doctor (JD) and Juris Indigenarum Doctor (JID) degrees. I also hold a Bachelor of Commerce from the Gustavson School of Business, with a specialization in Operations Management. After graduation, I look forward to continuing my work in the field of civil litigation, with a particular interest in incorporating Indigenous legal orders into my practice.

The Spectrum Hockey Academy program taught me that “character is not defined by what you do when everyone is watching, but by what you do when no one is” (Darren Smith, “Smitty,” former Program Director). This lesson always reminds me that, at the end of the day, no one will remember how many goals you scored or how many banners you won, but they will remember whether you were a good person. Spectrum Hockey Academy doesn’t just teach hockey skills; it teaches life skills. I am very grateful to be a Spectrum Hockey Academy alumni.

Aleko Sdrakas

I am currently in my 1st year of a Business Degree at Camosun College here in Victoria. On my days off of school I work at my family’s Greek restaurant (Maria’s souvlaki ). During the Regular hockey season I play for the University of Victoria Vikes and during the summer I play with the Greek National team. I’m honored to say that I was able to be a part of the Spectrum Hockey Academy throughout high school. During my time I learned so many valuable life lessons and gained plenty of core memories and friendships along the way. Spectrum Hockey Academy not only drove me in the right direction to my goals and achievements, but it also taught me how to be a mature and greater person. I am proud to say I was able to be apart of the culture and growing of the program!

Amy Johnston

I am currently in my 3rd year of elementary education program at Vancouver Island University to become a primary school teacher with the hopes of then working towards my masters in Special Education. At the moment I’m currently working full time as the Assistant General Manager of Bin 4 Nanaimo while in school full time. I have spent the last few years as a teachers assistant and have also enjoyed volunteering at various power skating camps alongside volunteering with the Capital Region Female Minor hockey Association. Alongside work and school, I have also done quite a bit of travelling the past few years.

Shayla MacDonald

I am currently in my fourth year at Anna Maria College in Massachusetts, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in social work. I am the captain of the Division 3 NCAA women’s ice hockey team.
I plan on becoming a correctional social worker, and am currently earning experience in this field with a full year internship at one of the county jails. I am a member of the Phi Alpha Eta Psi Honors Society for social work and am also a deans list student for the past 2.5 years. I plan on continuing my education and pursuing a Masters of Social Work shortly after graduation.

Hayden Visscher

I am working as a 4th year apprentice with the IBEW local 230, and have scheduled my final inter-provincial exam to become a Journeyman Electrician. I am also a Volunteer member of the View Royal Fire Department, where I have recently completed my 1001 as well as my 1002 training. I have aspirations of shifting careers and pursuing a full time position in the IAFF, serving the community that has helped shape me into the person I am today. I credit the Spectrum Hockey Academy for instilling in me not only a hard work ethic and the hunger to never stop learning, but also the ability to remain positive with whatever life throws your way.
Since graduation I have travelled a fair bit, but always found my way back to the arena. I played in the VIJHL before switching my jersey for a whistle to coach the Saanich Admirals. Hockey will forever have my heart and I make an effort to lace up my skates any opportunity I can. I am extremely honoured to say that I am alumni.

Makenna Percival

I am currently attending the University of Calgary, pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Communications and Media Marketing. After graduating from Spectrum Hockey Academy, I had the opportunity to compete in AUS USports Women’s hockey at Mount Allison University in New Brunswick while managing a full academic course load. I later made the decision to move to Calgary to further focus on my academic goals and long-term ambitions in communications, sport, and media. Alongside my studies, I continue to play in the Alberta Women’s Junior A league, where I serve as the Assistant Captain of my team. Spectrum Hockey Academy played a major role in shaping the work ethic, discipline, and resilience that guide me today. As I continue my studies, I’m actively pursuing opportunities through research and internships at the University of Calgary to further develop my experience in communications and sport media. I’m grateful for the foundation the academy gave me and proud to call myself an alumni.
